Pattaya police injured in chase of unlicensed motorcycle

Two police officers and a civilian were seriously injured in Pattaya on Monday, May 5, after a high-speed pursuit of a suspicious motorcycle ended in a head-on collision. The incident occurred during an evening patrol in Soi Nern Plub Wan, where local police were attempting to stop a modified motorbike that drew attention for its loud exhaust and lack of a licence plate.

Officers from Nong Prue Police Station initiated the chase after spotting the vehicle, but the pursuit quickly turned dangerous. While following the suspect, the officers’ patrol vehicle collided with an oncoming civilian motorcycle. Emergency responders transported both officers and the civilian to Pattaya Pattamakun Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Police are currently analysing CCTV footage to identify and locate the rider, according to The Pattaya News. The case has renewed public debate about illegal street racing and modified motorcycles in Pattaya, an issue that has long drawn complaints from both residents and tourists due to the noise and safety risks.

Law enforcement officials have reiterated their commitment to increasing enforcement efforts against unlicensed vehicles and illegal modifications, with an emphasis on reducing activities that endanger public safety.

In a statement at the hospital, Colonel Natthaphon Phongsuksakul, superintendent of Nong Prue Police Station, offered financial assistance to the injured officers and emphasised the department’s ongoing campaign to curb illegal street racing and dangerous driving behaviours.

In a separate but similar incident on February 12, police engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a suspect driving a grey pickup truck on Pracharat Road near Taopoon Market. The driver reversed at high speed to evade arrest, colliding with several civilian vehicles during the chase.
